I.I. Outlaw

Rebecca Du Casse stood, staring almost dejectedly at the water as she fished. She had never even been this far from her home before. She was a little nervous. She reached up to brush her hair out of her face but found it much shorter than she remembered. Then she remembered who she was now and what happened.

Less than a week ago, she had been engaged to King Derick. She had been the second daughter in her family, but it was agreed upon that she was fairer and kinder than her sister with traits that would be better for the King. Of course, she didn't realize that her sister was underhanded. She had somehow convinced the good King Derick that she was seeing another man. That was completely untrue but it had her in the castle's dungeon before sundown, her engagement to Derick terminated. She sat in the dungeon, crying to the guards that she was innocent but not one listened to her.

In her darkest moment, the head of the guards came to her, sending the other guards away. When they were gone he slipped her a change of clothes and quickly cut her hair with his dagger. He told her he believed her and would help her escape with her life. He quickly changed clothes as well and the two of the fled to the port, to board a ship and escape. The King somehow knew and the ship they were to take was burned in the harbor before they could even board. Without any other options, the two of the fled into the forest, to hide from the King.

Last she heard, her sister, Elizabeth, married the King herself becoming the queen of the land and ordering a reward for the capture of her sister. Rebecca was sure that Elizabeth would love to see her locked up for the rest of her life. Sadly, Elizabeth would not be getting her wish.

She looked across the water at her companion.  William Silverthorn had once been the Head of the Royal Guard. He was a good man and he had saved her life. He had given up everything for her and he would not be here if not for her. She felt terrible, She was dragging him down with her. Then again, he was the one who had chosen this path. He could have let her rot in the dungeon, but here he was.

He seemed calm enough at the moment and actually he always seemed calm. Even when he saw their ship was burning, he had just calmly taken her wrist in his hand and led her away from the port. He was such a reassuring person. Actually, Rebecca didn't know what she would have done without him.

Rebecca sighed wistfully. In fact, she couldn't have gotten anywhere without him. He was the one keeping her going. He had saved her life. Cutting her hair and having her wear pants instead of a skirt was keeping her alive. Once she had nearly been a Queen and now she was nothing more than an outlaw.

"I caught a fish!" She called across to William.

"Good!" He called back. "Now we have dinner!"

In the end, they fished until the sun set and wandered off into the forests once more. They had been sleeping among the trees lately, trying to avoid the law. Rebecca especially. She didn't know what would happen if she were caught.

They found an abandoned campground and the two of them, exhausted from their day in the sun, decided to sleep. They knew it would be an even harder day tomorrow. There was no real rest for an outlaw.

Rebecca had to some odd dreams. She dreamed that she became Queen but the dream quickly turned to a nightmare, her sister chasing her from her throne. As she tossed and turned, she then dreamed of a child, her son, who took the throne that was rightfully her's.

She opened her eyes, startled.

As she woke, rolling her bedding off her, she saw that William was awake too, looking sleepy as she felt. She felt as if she had not slept at all that night. It was still dark in the sky, prim time for them to get moving once more.

"Were you having a nightmare, Rebecca?" William asked. She couldn't look at him at the moment. They were both in their undergarments, since they had no other clothes to wear and didn't want to wear their day clothes in their bed.

"Sort of" She answered.

"I had a dream my son took the throne from the King"

"That's quite a dream" He seemed amused by the idea. She found something else in though. It seemed like a dream but it seemed attainable. She could do this. If not her son, his son or his son or even his son. It didn't matter as long as a child of her blood took the throne.

They dressed silently and then when they were ready, William walked over to her.

"Are you still thinking of your dream?" He asked.

"Yes. I would wish it were a reality" She said honestly.

"Maybe someday, right, Rebecca?" He smiled, as if encouraging her. She never noticed him when they lived in the castle but he had a charming smile. She couldn't help but smile a little herself.  "First though, we have to get the law off of us. There's an easy way to do that and its just to pay them off."

"Pay them off. Right." She sounded disdained but, this was the first step. First, get the law off their tail and then she could work on getting a child of her blood on the throne. It would be a hard, long journey but it would be worth it. At least so she hoped.
